Last night I had a rather short-notice gig doing caricatures at a Christmas party. It was really fun, and the guests at the party treated me like a full-out superstar. It was an excellent evening. Check out the below GRID of caricatures that I did last night. These pics are the first I've ever done using a cell phone camera, and I think they look pretty darn good!

More comin' up!

I won against my computer problems about 4 to 1. I'll just say that iPhoto is one weird-ass program (or maybe it's the camera I use, I'm not sure).

Well, I'm back! I really do have a lot of sketches to post but I'll need to photo them again. For now, here's a couple of sketches I've done lately. The second is done in nupastel.

Well, I finally did it! I went a WHOLE MONTH without updating! For this, I deserve to be the King of Lethargy.

Actually, I was really going to update last night when my iTunes and iPhoto apps took a shit on me and now I'm not sure how to fix 'em. Not yet, anyway.

However, I will say that there is some good news. If everything goes smoothly and I work my ass off, the debut issue of my comicbook COULD be done by the end of the year! (Yay)

Once I get my computer back on track, I have some fun stuff from the park to put up.

Later,

Billy

This was my final park sketch from today - and also my favorite - but it has some certain flaws that irritate me.

If I haven't said it on this blog, I've said it many times to co-workers: I love drawing babies. They are by far the most fun in almost every way (at least at my job). They are simultaniously CUTE and (in their own way) EXAGGERATED. For a retail caricature artist, it's the best of both worlds!

While I try to always champion baby caricatures, there are inevitable failures, and it's always because of an unhappy baby. Simply because, I COULD draw a good caricature of a cranky baby... but could I sell it? Maybe some eccentric customer out there MIGHT buy it, but in the real world, I have to draw somewhere between a blank face to a happy face. This baby smiled only once for a brief moment, and I feel that was a big factor between this sketch being awesome or what it turned out to be (just okay).

No worries, though: the mom was IN LOVE with the drawing and bought a frame. It's just what always happens in this line of work. You just try harder next time.

I was really happy with that last one. Too bad I couldn't side-by-side it.

Hand-cut Paper Silhouette Art. You sit your subject in front of you as you would a profile-style portrait, but you cut the image out by hand with scissors. Here are the first two silhouettes I did, and without any hands-on practice. I hate how these cut-outs don't fill the frame, but they are my very first tries, and I started making them BIGGER, at least once. More to follow, hopefully with side-by-sides.

Here are some more caricatures.

The last one is Mr. MARKO...

HEY, Mendoza:

I don't blame you for being a nerd. It just runs thick through your Italian blood. Have fun studying math or whatever the hell, and say hi to the Governator for me.

And don't worry. I'll just make the stupid cartoon by myself.

Ya lousy bum.

Every one of these park caricatures was a hit with the customers. The first two are my favorites because babies have become my muse. Although the first is a little older than a baby, my best sketches are ususally babies (yet many of the recent ones I was unable to record for one reason or another) and I take great pleasure in drawing their silly, constipated faces. So, here's the latest cartoons:

Meanwhile, there's the world of retail PORTRAITURE. I recently sold these two portraits (which were my first-ever portrait sales, and obviously without a great while of practice), after practically begging the customers to do it, offering the art for free with the frame of their choice. I wanted to take side-by-sides of these portraits, but it was impossible in the melee. So, face-paint artist Beth stood in place of the actual subjects in these side-by-side photographs.

The likeness is extaordinary.

Stuff from the ol' sketchbook. I want to do a really nice caricature of comedian Bill Maher (one of my favorites), and the first page below was me working out how I wanted to go about it. The inked sketch is the one I want to expand on. The other stuff is just some crap. There are some cool poses in there.

During my lunch breaks at the park, I bring along my sketchbook and scratch stuff out while I'm eating cookies and drinking my iced coffee. The sketches below are ideas for some characters I'm working on. The third one is a modified version of a caricature I did of my co-worker, Beth, so it's basically Beth with armor!

More soon.

No interesting comments. Just drawings.

I'm a bad blogger, which is probably a good thing.

I thought the guy in the first sketch was going to kick my ass when he first saw it. Then, he let out a little chuckle but was still clearly perturbed about how I drew him. Before I drew him, he even asked me to "make it funny". Well, I did. Har har. He ended up buying it, though, and he let me take a pick of it, too.

Doesn't make any sense.

P.S.

I've also renovated the caricature archive, ditched the old crappy stuff and updated with the best of the last few months.
